Environmental Litigation: A Tale 50 Years Litigating and Erin Brokovich, Steven L. Hoch, Clark Hill
Mr. Hoch has seen the development of environmental litigation change for almost 50 years. He has litigated many cases, has dealt with all of California’s environmental agencies and the EPA. Mr. Hoch has also been involved in many transactional matters dealing with environmental issues. A prolific author on environmental issues and frequent speaker at both regional and national events, he brings both a serious and sometimes humorous side to his practice.

Martha Guzman, EPA Region 9 Administrator
Martha Guzman was sworn in as EPA Regional Administrator for the nation’s Pacific Southwest Region (Region 9) on December 20, 2021. In this role she is leading EPA efforts to protect public health and the environment for the region spanning Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, the U.S. Pacific Islands territories, and 148 Tribal Nations. Her focus is on advancing Administrator Regan’s and President Biden’s priorities in the areas of climate change, environmental justice and restoring scientific integrity, and more broadly achieving progress in making the air, land and water cleaner and safer for the residents of the Pacific Southwest. Notable in a region with a significant Hispanic/Latino population, she is the first Latina to serve as Regional Administrator.

Misael Cabrera, PE, Director, Arizona Dept of Environmental Quality
Misael Cabrera was appointed as the Director of the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) by Governor Douglas Ducey in 2015, after joining the agency in 2011 as Deputy Director. As Director of ADEQ, Cabrera promotes regulatory efficiency and is committed to effective partnerships to benefit all Arizonans. Before joining ADEQ, Cabrera held a variety of technical and leadership roles at several environmental and engineering firms. Cabrera currently serves as the ECOS Innovation and Productivity Committee Chair. A registered professional engineer, Cabrera has more than two decades of experience in the environmental field.

Ten Biggest Surprises from my Experience as the Acting EPA Deputy Administrator, Henry R. Darwin, Gallagher & Kennedy
Henry Darwin, former Director of the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and COO for the State of Arizona, shares the most surprising and challenging issues he encountered while serving as the COO and Acting Deputy Administrator for EPA for over three years. Henry will cover the operational, budgetary, and policy-driven differences between leading ADEQ and the EPA. He will also share some insights regarding the sharing of environmental protection responsibilities between the states and the federal government, especially as they relate to EPA priorities like Environmental Justice and Climate Change.

2022 STUDENT POSTER COMPETITION
EPAZ is hosting a student poster competition and selected posters will be on display and judged during the conference. The deadline to submit a topic summary and poster outline was January 21, 2022. Cash prizes will be awarded to the 1st Place, 2nd Place and People’s Choice posters.
2022 EPAZ SCHOLARSHIPS
Encouraging students who have invested their future in the environment, EPAZ awards over $8,000 each year to graduate and undergraduate students in environmental programs in Arizona. The deadline to submit an application was January 9, 2022 and the recipients will be announced at the conference.
