BRING US YOUR SITE!
An expert panel of representatives from ADEQ’s Voluntary Remediation, Brownfields, and Declaration of Environmental Use Restriction (DEUR) programs will dissect the mechanics of each program in an interactive format. We will show examples of redevelopment projects and the benefits of bringing sites back into beneficial reuse. For consultants, we will provide insight into which of these programs is right for your clients. This will then be an opportunity for you to ask knowledgeable ADEQ staff any questions involving entering and working within each program and how the three programs can intersect. Agency expectations and our latest initiatives to assist with closure and redevelopment will also be discussed.
Daniel Sola, R.G. is a principal hydrogeologist with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. He joined ADEQ in 2020 after over 30 years as an environmental consultant. He moved to Phoenix in 2014 but was involved in characterization and remediation of Arizona environmental sites beginning in the mid 1990’s, including the Motorola 52nd street Superfund site and the Tucson Airport. Dan provides senior level technical support, mentoring, and strategic advice primarily with the Voluntary Remediation Program, the Water Quality Assurance Revolving Fund (WQARF), and the Federal Projects Unit.
Scott Green, R.G., is currently responsible for managing the Brownfields, Voluntary Remediation (VRP) and DEUR Programs. These programs provide interested parties the ability to select remedies appropriate to problems, accelerate cleanups to bring sites into beneficial reuse, and enhance Arizona's unique environment. Scott joined the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) in 2013 after spending 30 years in the environmental consulting industry and became manager of the Water Quality Assurance Revolving Fund (WQARF) before his current assignment. Scott has provided characterization and remediation services and strategies to industrial clients across the U.S., has a Masters degree in Hydrogeology, and is a registered/licensed Geologist in Arizona and Tennessee.
Catlin Burwell has worked at the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality since 2018. She serves as the DEUR coordinator, assisting Arizona property owners with preparing and executing DEUR documents otherwise known as property use restrictions or land use controls. Ms. Burwell also serves as a Voluntary Remediation Program project manager and coordinator of the EPA-funded Preliminary Assessment Site Inspection Grant. She holds a Bachelor’s of Arts in Earth and Environmental Studies and concurrent Master’s in Sustainability Solutions and Legal Studies from Arizona State University.
Travis Barnum has worked at the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality since 2007. He has been an inspector for hazardous waste and air quality NESHAP sites, project manager for CERCLA/Superfund sites, inspections/compliance and outreach for underground storage tanks and is now serving as the Brownfields Coordinator. He has a Bachelor’s of Science from Arizona State University and a Masters in International Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. Prior to working for the State of Arizona, Travis worked for two Fortune 500 companies with an emphasis on problem solving and improving the customer experience.
